Award winning and record breaking – the Bell’s bridge is 35 this year

Glasgow’s landmark is the world’s longest cable-stayed pedestrian swing bridge

Named after the bridge’s sponsor, whiskey company Arthur Bell & Sons, the Bell’s Bridge was constructed in 1988 across the river Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland. The bridge was built for the Glasgow Garden Festival. It provided a pedestrian route across the Clyde from the main exhibition site to the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre for the festival’s 4.3m visitors.

It is the world’s longest cable-stayed pedestrian swing bridge and features 12 ·¬ÇÑÓ°ÊÓ HiAm stay cables anchored at the tapered pylon and radiating out to the bridge deck. The northern span rests on the quay and a river pier. The two cable-stayed spans pivot, enabling over-height river traffic to pass.
